DPSA Minister urges for citizen-centred service delivery

Minister of Public Service and Administration

In his keynote address at GovTech 2009, minister of Public Service and Administration, Mr Masenyani Richard Baloyi, said that South African citizens should become active participants in discussions with government. The voice of citizens must somehow be channeled so that it is heard and taken into consideration when government services are designed, thus preparing the way for information communication technologies (ICTs) to proactively respond to their needs, he said.

SITA calls upon industry to end corruption

The business of procuring technology on behalf of government places SITA in a sensitive position where the possibility of corruption and fraud is a very real one. The agency says it takes allegations and the possibility of these activities seriously and it has concluded research into reports from the media and other quarters. These results were presented at GovTech 2009 by acting CEO and chief of strategic services for SITA, Moses Mtimunye.

The international consulting firm Accenture has identified Canada as a world leader in public sector service delivery, and other countries are now looking to Canada as a best practice example. Addressing GovTech delegates on Monday, David Primmer, chief information officer of the government of Manitoba in Canada, highlighted some of the key lessons learned as it embarked on an IT and people-centric strategy.
 
Information technology (IT) is a daunting challenge at the best of times, and it is even more difficult today as governments around the globe face tightening finances and diminishing revenues amidst the economic downturn. Under such circumstances, which in today's world are simply not sustainable, the smart thing to do is to look for opportunities and to borrow ideas from other companies who have demonstrated savings of time and money in solving major service delivery challenges. But where to look?
